Do you know anyone who loves making drums even more than playing them? Queer & Brown in Steeltown does! This episode features the incredible Djembe maker & drummer, Kelly E. Parker! And she plays for us too! Kelly’s been holding it down in the ‘burgh for over 20 years and is one of the city’s finest Djembe players. We were so excited to sit down with her recently during the Rhinestone Steel Queer Music Festival to hear all about her rich experiences with the drum. And as an added bonus, you’ll also hear in the background Cuban-American, queer, lady-punk artist and writer Cristy C. Road’s lively performance. So get ready internets, this one’s about West African drums and the politics of gender, right here on Q&B!
Our topics include:
- Having the support of African men but not African American men
- Shaving the hair off of goat skin
- “She gonna take our women!”
- Not doing drum circles
Apologies for the dips and rises in sound. Tried to fix it best we could.
